BBC Radio 1’s Greg James has shared behind-the-scenes memories from Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s secret New York wedding, describing the event as “unbelievably fun” and “amazingly strange but exciting.” James flew to New York with his wife, author Bella Mackie, and returned to his show on Wednesday to recount star-studded moments and festival-like celebrations.

The couple’s July 3 ceremony at Madison Square Garden was tightly guarded, with around 1,000 guests from music, film and sport. James said the guestlist read like a roll-call of global celebrities and the night included unlimited food, multiple cakes and an open invitation to dance on stage.

Guest experience and atmosphere
Star-studded setting
James joked every 10 seconds someone famous seemed to appear, likening the scene to an animated Madame Tussauds. He described surreal encounters — sitting with Bella and Hugh Grant at one point and praised the buzzing, celebratory atmosphere.

Party details
Rather than a formal sit-down dinner, the wedding featured abundant food stations and desserts. James joked “the first 10,000 drinks were free,” admitting the revelry led to an “incredible hangover.” Guests were encouraged to join the stage while the DJ played, and James joined in the dancing.

Secrets, keepsakes and logistics
Travel and secrecy
James revealed he’d kept the trip secret even from friends and his boss, taking annual leave to attend after Swift had confirmed on Radio 1 a year earlier he’d be invited. He and his wife met other UK guests at a “secret dinner” before the ceremony.

Keepsakes and outfits
On air, James produced “two little doilies” he’d taken as keepsakes. He confirmed Bella brought several dresses while he wore the same suit he’d worn at a recent public appearance.
