Pakistan has welcomed recent positive developments in Syria and urged sustained international support for the country’s political transition, stabilization and reintegration efforts, Pakistan’s UN envoy said at a United Nations Security Council briefing on 22 June 2026.
Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad praised growing cooperation between Syria and the UN and highlighted progress in the political transition, including steps toward reconvening parliament and integrating local structures in north-eastern Syria into national institutions moves he said will strengthen stability, national cohesion and restoration of state authority.

Ambassador Asim condemned Israel’s reported military incursions, arbitrary arrests and property destruction in Syria, and denounced a recently announced five-year settlement expansion plan in the occupied Golan as illegal under international law. He called on Israel to respect Syria’s sovereignty, comply with relevant Security Council resolutions and honor the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
Underlining that a Syrian-owned, Syrian-led political process is the best route to lasting peace, Pakistan urged all stakeholders to maintain constructive engagement across political, economic and security domains. Ambassador Asim also stressed the importance of transitional justice and accountability as pillars of sustainable peace, while warning that threats from Da’esh, foreign terrorist fighters and other extremist groups remain serious security concerns that require continued counterterrorism cooperation.
The Pakistani envoy emphasized the urgent need for more international humanitarian and development assistance to address funding gaps, promote economic rehabilitation and accelerate reconstruction. Reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment, Ambassador Asim said Pakistan will continue to support Syria’s reintegration into the international community and efforts to achieve a peaceful, stable and prosperous future.
