A jailed Vietnamese tycoon’s luxury assets including Birkin handbags, high-end cars and yachts are being auctioned to help repay victims of one of the largest frauds in history, but the sales are unlikely to cover the vast sums owed. Truong My Lan, once among Vietnam’s richest businesswomen, was convicted in a multi‑billion‑dollar scheme that siphoned roughly $44 billion through a major bank. She received two life sentences after an earlier 2024 death sentence (later commuted) tied to an alleged $12 billion embezzlement; authorities demanded massive repayments to spare capital punishment.

So far, seized items have fetched only modest sums compared with the damage. In May, two of Lan’s Hermès Birkin bags sold online for about $539,000. Three luxury cars including a Maybach that sold for roughly $630,000 and attempts to sell her yacht and other vessels have produced limited success, with some assets repeatedly failing to attract buyers. Proceeds from auctions go first to judgment enforcement costs, legal fees and victim compensation, but authorities say Lan has repaid only about $455,000 to date.

Experts note that seizing and selling luxury assets often fails to recoup large-scale fraud losses. Vietnamese media report that many confiscated items are difficult to sell and sometimes relisted multiple times without a buyer. Lan’s sprawling real estate holdings and complex web of loans through shell companies compounded the scale of the scandal, and investigators have accused her of bribing officials to hide the fraud. Even with multiple auctions underway, officials acknowledge that recovering anywhere near the $27 billion still owed to victims will be extremely difficult.
