A 9-year-old who fled war-torn Ukraine is already being hailed as a potential future tennis superstar after impressing legendary coach Rick Macci. Vlada Hranchar, who escaped Odessa with her mother when Russia invaded in 2022, now trains in Florida and has drawn high praise from Macci the coach behind early development of Serena and Venus Williams.

Macci, speaking to CNN Sports, predicted Hranchar could one day reach world No. 1, citing her exceptional work ethic, athleticism and competitive drive. Hranchar’s love of tennis began early: she told her parents at age three that she would “beat everyone,” and that confidence has driven rapid progress. Her family documented her development on Instagram, which led to tournament invitations in the United States and eventually the family’s relocation.

The move wasn’t simple. Hranchar’s father first traveled to the U.S. to establish stability; Covid restrictions delayed reunification, and the 2022 war in Ukraine accelerated their relocation. After reuniting in New York, the family settled temporarily in Vermont with support from impressed coaches before Vlada earned a place at Rick Macci’s Florida academy in 2023.

Macci says Vlada stands out from other prospects he’s seen over the years thanks to a rare combination of fitness, skill and mentality. Her parents both supportive of her journey joined interviews with Macci, who praised the youngster’s discipline and natural talent. While long-term predictions for a nine-year-old should be cautious, Hranchar’s story from escaping conflict to training under a top coach has already captured the tennis world’s attention.
