Portugal reached the World Cup last 16 after Gonçalo Ramos’s dramatic stoppage-time header secured a 2-1 victory over Croatia in Toronto. The substitute nodded home a superb Rafael Leão pass in the fourth minute of added time to settle a gripping contest in sweltering conditions.
Early Drama and Ronaldo Response
Ivan Perišić put Croatia ahead in the 53rd minute, sliding the ball under Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa to stun the Portuguese side. Cristiano Ronaldo thought he had equalised moments later, but his goal was ruled out for offside. Portugal were eventually awarded a penalty when Renato Veiga was felled by Nikola Vlašić; after a VAR review the spot-kick stood and Ronaldo calmly converted, drilling the ball down the middle to make it 1-1 his first ever World Cup knockout goal.
Croatia’s Pressure and Disallowed Strikes
Croatia dominated possession and created the clearer chances for long periods. Mateo Kovačić’s low drive was tipped onto the post by Costa, and Petar Skujić’s strike was ruled out for offside. Mario Pašalić also struck the frame with a header that grazed wide. In the dying seconds Josko Gvardiol thought he had salvaged a late equaliser, but the flag had already gone up and the goal was disallowed, leaving the Croats stunned.
Ramos Seals It, Portugal Progress
With time running out Rafael Leão floated a perfect cross and Ramos headed home to send Portugal through. Ronaldo was substituted in the 81st minute for Rúben Neves as coach Fernando Santos shuffled his options. Portugal now face Spain in the next round in Dallas on Monday, where their mix of veteran leadership and young attacking talent will be tested.
