A World Cup love story has taken root in Lawrence, Kansas, after Algeria chose the small city as its tournament base camp. The university town of about 100,000 rolled out the red carpet raising Algerian flags, hosting community training sessions and even offering “Soccer 101” classes to teach locals the rules and fan culture. “We are so happy that they chose Lawrence as their base camp,” said Ruth DeWitt, director of community relations at Explore Lawrence. Hundreds of fans greeted the team on arrival, and players have joined local children at open training sessions.

Local businesses and residents have embraced the visitors: restaurants are preparing halal options, community members are hosting supporters, and artist Stan Herd created a massive Algeria flag earthwork at the University of Kansas that can be seen from campus rooftops. With sizable Algerian communities nearby in Missouri and visitors traveling from across the U.S., Lawrence has become a daily destination for fans hoping to see their team.

Residents say the experience has strengthened local ties and showcased Kansas hospitality on a global stage. “That’s exactly what the World Cup is about,” DeWitt said, praising the tournament for bringing people together. Algeria will play holders Argentina at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, and Lawrence’s warm welcome will remain part of their World Cup story.
